Lauren Ries shot an 85 to win individually by 11 strokes, and the Monticello High School girls golf team used an ultra-consistent performance to win the team title in the Class 2A Regional First Round Tournament played Monday, May 14 in Clinton.

Monticello’s second through sixth golfers were separated by just four strokes at the end.

“That’s what we needed to do to advance,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “I was happy with the way they played. They kept their composure, and were able to play with positive attitudes.”

Ries shot 44-41–85 and was never challenged for individual medalist honors.

“I just tried to limit my mistakes,” Ries said. “If one thing went wrong, I tried not to make it worse.”

The rest of the team, Rebekah Prull, Dru Kramer, Lilly Lambert, Lydia Franzenburg and Marissa McNally, ranged from 100 to 104.

“They played consistent, and just kept plugging away,” Steen said.

The Panthers also played in the River Valley Conference Meet May 8 in Riverside, and finished fifth of 13 teams with a 426.

Ries was medalist in that one as well, winning a playoff by sinking a 20-foot putt after finishing with a 94. Lambert had a 106, Kramer shot 112, Prull scored 114, Franzenburg carded a 117 and McNally had a 119.

The Panthers will play in the regional finals Monday, May 21, 10 a.m. at the Dyersville Country Club, with hopes of qualifying for the state tournament.
