It was a breakthrough day in a couple of ways for the Monticlelo High School bowling teams as they opened the season against Marion Nov. 25 at the Cedar Rapids Bowling Center.

The Panthers swept Marion in the varsity matches, with the boys riding a strong individual round to a 2883 to 2428 victory. In so doing, three members of the varsity team – and one on JV – posted two-game averages of better than 200.

For the Monti girls, the breakthrough was significant in another way; after going winless in the 2018-19 season, the Panthers started this season with a 1905 to 1867 triumph over Marion.

“We had a good meet,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “I’m proud of the way everyone responded.”

The boys were led by Levi Temple, who fired a two-game series of 242-214–456. Close behind him was Logan Farmer, with 214-238–452. Caleb Gillmore also averaged over 200, with 225-201–426.

Those scores helped lead the Panthers to a 463-pin lead over the Indians after the individual round. The Baker round (five team games) didn’t go as well for Monticello, which won just one of the five and lost the round by eight pins, but the lead in the individual round was more than enough to secure the overall win.

“That (the Baker round) has been the biggest struggle with the boys,” Meyer said. “We’re still trying to figure out how to make that work. We have room to grow there.”

The Panther girls trailed by 18 pins after the individual round, but performed well in the Baker round, winning three of the five games and outscoring Marion by 56 to claim the overall victory.

“I’m happy with the girls,” Meyer said. “They really did a good job with Baker.”

Aubree Fairley had the best two-game series for the girls, a 123-157–280. Louise Rydell had a 256 series that included a 165 game. Evee Krouse shot a 253.

Monticello also won both JV matches. The boys beat Marion 2295 to 1568, led by Alex Fagan, who rolled a 191-223 – 414 series.

Marion didn’t have a complete girls’ team. Monticello scored 1376, with Rylee Bauer posting a 226 two-game series and Aleasha Schilling totaling 215.

“It’s a team sport, and everybody got to contribute,” Meyer said. “Some were better at one part (of the match) than the other, but that’s why you have six people.”

The Panthers had four home meets in a row scheduled to start December, including a Dec. 3 match with Cascade and Dec. 6 against West Delaware.

“That’s an opportunity for us,” Meyer said of hosting the matches.
