Monticello got the chance to look at some of Eastern Iowa’s strongest girls track and field competition in a pair of meets last week.

The Panthers competed in the Tri-State Invitational April 6 at Dubuque Senior, and placed ninth out of 13 teams. Three days later, some of those same opponents attended the Dyersville Beckman Invitational, but this time Monticello took fifth of 16 teams.

“I am really pleased with how the kids performed at both meets,” Monticello coach Vallerie Lynn said.

At Senior, the top finish for Monticello was a third place by Emma Althoff in the 3,000-meter run. The Panthers were fourth in the 4x800 relay.

“We saw some great competition from both 4A and 3A teams in Eastern Iowa,” Lynn said. “It was good to see where we stand against teams like Wahlert, Decorah and Western Dubuque, because they could be at our state qualifying meet.

“We ran a lot of season best times, and had some PRs from the girls. I really like the meet because it was JV and varsity, so all the girls got to compete.”

At Beckman April 9, the Panther distance medley team of Jordan Norton, Claire Tuetken, Lydia Recker and Triniti Etzel won with a time of 4 minutes, 41.49 seconds. The Panthers also had a third place finish from its 4x400 team.

“Friday went really well,” coach Lynn said. “We adjusted some relays and put some kids in different events, and still came home with fifth place.

“Cora Mescher had a huge night, with PRs in both the shot and discus, and scored points for us in both. All three girls in the 1,500 placed and scored points for us, including Emma Althoff, Triniti Etzel and Karle Kramer. Karle also placed in the 3,000.

“We are looking forward to this upcoming week to move some kids around in the lineup again to get all the puzzle pieces to fit.”
