With some dramatic season-best performances, the Monticello High School girls track and field team earned five spots at State during the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet Friday, May 10 at Dean Nelson Field in Monticello.

Cold weather had caused qualifying meets across the state to postpone from Thursday to Friday, and as a result, teams got the opportunity to compete in much better conditions.

The Panthers took advantage, sending five individuals to State.

“We had a very competitive state qualifying meet,” Monticello coach Vallerie Lynn said. “You have to be on your ‘A’ game that night to qualify. It worked out for some, and others fell short.”

Among the qualifiers was one champion, high jumper Gabby Guilford, who jumped 5-foot to earn her second straight trip to State.

There were huge improvements from four other state qualifiers. Karle Kramer ran second and Triniti Etzel was third in the 3,000-meter run, Kramer in 11 minutes, 26.00 seconds; and Etzel in 11:26.33.

“The big surprises of the meet were Triniti Etzel, who cut 45 seconds off her best 3,000 time; and Karle Kramer, who cut more than 20 seconds,” Lynn said.

Similarly, Payton Jaeger threw 39-foot on her first shot put attempt, finishing third overall but earning a trip to State. Leah Holub also had a third place finish, in the 100-meter dash, but advanced.

“Payton Jaeger improved by more than a foot in the shot put,” the coach said. “Leah Holub ran her best race of the season with an amazing finish in the 100.”

Monticello’s 4x800 team finished eighth, but ran a season-best time, the coach said. And the 4x100 team missed a trip to State by .5 of a second.

“This was a huge rebuilding year for our program, and I feel very confident about our future,” Lynn said. “The young girls now know what it takes to compete in varsity track.”

State meet times

The state meet is Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

     • Jaeger, shot put, Thursday, 9 a.m.

     • Kramer and Etzel, 3,000, Thursday, 9:40 a.m.

     • Holub, 100 dash prelims, Thursday, 12:50 p.m.

     • Guilford, high jump, Friday, 11:30 a.m.
