Panthers show signs of potential at Cascade tourney
Hidden within a 1-3 finish for the Monticello High School volleyball team at the Cascade Tournament Aug. 28 were pieces of success, both from a team standpoint and individually.
The Panthers went 1-2 in pool play during the tournament, then lost a quarterfinal match to Dyersville Beckman, which started the season ranked 12th in Class 2A.
“It was good to get some games under our belt and get some of the nerves out,” Monticello coach Stacie Breitbach said. “We played some tough competition and have a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses.”
The Panthers went to a third set against Waterloo East to open the tournament, before coming out with a 21-15, 11-21, 15-11 win.
“Against East, they played well and worked hard for each point,” the coach said. “They played with confidence and determination, which was great to see.”
Then came a couple of narrow losses. Monticello lost to Dubuque Senior in three sets, then couldn’t quite pull out a win in a 15-21, 20-22 loss to East Buchanan. The Panthers lost to Beckman 9-21, 10-21.
Some statistics rose to the surface. The Panthers served 100 percent, 41-for-41, against East. The team also had 38 digs in that match, and 26 against Senior.
Individually, Keziah McQuillen had 13 digs and Jayden Kuper had nine against East. McQuillen also served 10-for-10, and Mya Hansen had 12 assists and two aces.
Emma Hynick and Kuper had six kills apiece against Senior. Mya Hansen had 10 assists, and Mia Jaeger served 12-for-12. Jordan Fangmann and Mya Hansen had two aces apiece.
Mya Hansen had nine assists and served 7-for-7 in the East Buchanan match. Bronwyn Hodge and Hynick had four kills each.
And against Beckman, McQuillen and Kuper had four digs each. Hynick and Hodge recorded three kills apiece.
“Overall I was pleased at how served and serve-received,” the coach said. “It allowed us to work on setting up our offense and run schemes we have been working on.
“The girls are not afraid to work hard, so I anticipate good things to come.”
