The Panther boys broke into the win column for the first time this season, and the girls staged a competitive match with some individual highlights, as the Monticello High School bowling teams hosted Durant Dec. 8 at Legacy Lanes.

The boys defeated Durant 2855 to 2653, despite totaling about 150 pins fewer than in the last to West Delaware the previous week.

“We did not perform well,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said. “We missed a lot of spares. We didn’t press quite as hard as we pressed the first week, but I still think we’re pressing. It’s on the mental side.”

The individual side of things won the boys’ match for Monticello. The Panthers won that round by 202 points, and that wound up being the final margin of victory, as the teams tied 919 to 919 in the Baker round.

Easton Lee had the highest single game and two-game totals in the match, bowling a 247 as part of a 416 series. Gary Pasker had a 390 that included a 219 game, and Levi Temple opened with a 229 and finished with 387.

Meyer said he will continue to work with the boys on focus issues.

“They’re not having fun,” he said. “And that’s not good. Win or lose, this is supposed to be fun.”

The Panther girls were locked in a tight battle with Durant after the individual round. They trailed the Wildcats by just 11 pins heading into the Baker round, and won the first of those five games to pull to within five.

But Durant won the next three Baker games, opening up a 76-pin lead, and ended up winning by 71.

Emma Hynick had very strong individual performances, a 143 and then a match-high 195 for a 338 two-game series. Nora Sperfslage had a 253 series, and Karle Kramer totaled 226.

“We’ve got some athletic girls. They’re new to bowling, but they’re athletic,” Meyer said.

“That’s the good thing about the girls that are coming out for bowling: Most of them are either volleyball players, or they run track; they do something that helps them understand motion and balance.

“The other coaches in the community have done a good job of teaching that before they even get here. They’re behind on bowling, because they’ve never done it. But they have the understanding of body awareness so they can benefit us quickly.”
