A rally in the first game and a shutout in the second enabled the Monticello High School baseball team to secure a doubleheader sweep of neighboring rival Anamosa June 17 at Dailey Field in Monticello.

Monticello won by scores of 6-5 and 6-0. The Panthers went on to lose a road game at Durant June 20, 8-6.

The Anamosa doubleheader didn’t start out very well for the Panthers as the Blue Raiders scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Monticello scratched back into it, scoring twice in the bottom of the third. Then, in the fifth, the Panthers tallied four times to take the lead, and the lead held up, as relief pitcher Tyler Blattner held Anamosa scoreless over the last 4 2/3 innings to get the win. Blattner allowed five hits and struck out two.

Jon Mootz and Caleb Sauser both went 2-for-3 at the plate; Mootz had a double and two runs batted in. Justin Recker was 1-for-3 with three RBIs.

The Panthers controlled the second game, particularly after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-0 lead. Dylan Roher and Jeff Carlson combined to pitch a two-hitter, with Roher working the first five innings, striking out five, and getting the win.

Monticello had 10 hits, led by Mootz, who was 3-for-4. Recker went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Tyler Luensman also was 2-for-4. Gavin Cooper hit a double and drove in a run.

On June 20, the Panthers traveled to Durant for a single game, and lost 8-6. Monticello led 6-3 after five innings, but Durant scored five in the bottom of the sixth and kept Monticello from responding in the seventh.

Carlson pitched five innings, and Blattner pitched one, taking the loss. Seven different Panthers had one hit each; Gavin Cooper had a double. Sauser drove in two runs. Recker stole two bases.
