A sweep of three opponents in a quadrangular meet at Wilton, and a fourth place finish in the Loyd Shaffer Invitational at Marion, made last week a big one for the Monticello High School wrestling team.

The Panthers (10-4 in dual meets) traveled to Wilton Jan. 10, and overcame three opponents from within the River Valley Conference.

Monticello defeated Tipton 45-31, Wilton 46-29, and Bellevue 48-30.

“The night at Wilton was once again a full team effort,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “In every single dual, someone different stepped up and got a big win.”

In the Tipton match, the Panthers led 33-31 with two matches to go, and sealed the deal with pins by Lake Stahlberg and Wade Picray. Spencer Avery and Owen Ray also scored big pins.

“Against Wilton, Jericho Strouf and Spencer Avery again had huge wins for us,” the coach said. “I really feel Jericho Strouf had the biggest win of the night against Wilton. Jericho was in a tight match, and stayed aggressive, getting the win. That match changed the dynamics of the dual and kept the momentum our way.”

Monticello won the last three matches in the final dual against Bellevue – pins by Picray, Mark Sunlin and Ray – to break a 30-30 tie and win by 18.

“It is very exciting and fun to watch the team battle every single match,” coach Luensman said.

Five Panthers went 3-0 for the night. Ray had two pins and a major decision, Bo Kramer had two pins and a decision, Chase Luensman and Stahlberg each had two pins and a forfeit win, and Kain Luensman had a pin and two forfeits.

Spencer Avery, Sunlin and Picray each went 2-1 with two pins.

Others winning by pin during the meet included Ethan Tallman and Jericho Strouf.

Three Panther champions emerged from the Shaffer Invitational, held Saturday, Jan. 12 in Marion. Kain Luensman at 126, Chase Luensman at 145, and Lake Stahlberg at 220 all were champions. Wade Picray had a third place finish, Sunlin and Ray were fifth, Ethan Tallman finished sixth, and Bo Kramer was seventh.

“Marion is a very tough tournament, and that is why we attend it,” the coach said. “This tournament has a wide range of competition, and I was happy with how the team wrestled. Fourth place at the Marion tournament is a good showing for only taking eight wrestlers.

“Kain, Chase and Lake looked very good throughout the day. They looked confident and controlled their matches.

“Kain defeated a wrestler from Louisa-Muscatine who was 25-1 coming into the tournament, and Lake defeated a 10th-ranked wrestler from Atlantic.”
