Panthers, weather improve at Tipton

     As the weather improves, so do the Monticello Panthers.

     The Panther boys track team competed in a pair of meets last week, finally coming across pleasant weather in the Tiger Relays at Tipton on Friday, April 5.

     There, Monticello placed fourth in a competitive field of 12 teams.

     “We are competing better as a team each meet,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “We had a lot of personal bests with the nice weather at Tipton.”

     The Panthers also had a pair of wins, from Avery Martensen in the 110-meter high hurdles, in 15.10 seconds; and the 800 sprint medley team of Martensen, Colin Jordan, Gavin Cooper and Carter Cruise, in 1:40.13.

     Monticello also double-placed in two events, the discus (Wade Picray second, Luke Weber sixth) and the shot put (Lake Stahlberg third, Mason Reuter seventh).

     The team won four junior varsity events: Brayden Cleeton in the discus, Caleb Hogan in the shot put, and the shuttle hurdle and 800 sprint medley teams.

     Earlier, the Panthers placed in a tie for third place among 15 teams at the Fearing Relays April 2 in Anamosa.

     Martensen was a double winner in that meet, taking the 110 hurdles (15.15) and the 400 hurdles (57.16). He was second in the high jump, and the 800 sprint medley team of Rylan Cooper, Caleb Sauser, Gavin Cooper and Carter Cruise also was second.
