A three-game week resulted in one victory for the Monticello High School girls basketball team last week.

The week opened with a 66-20 home win over Camanche, as Karli Recker went 4-for-4 from three-point range, 8-for-11 overall, and totaled 21 points.

“I think she was really focused and took very good shots,” Monticello coach Donnie Kremer said. “Karli is the type of girl that just keeps on working hard and continues to shoot the same shots. Eventually they will fall.”

Monticello surged to an 8-0 early lead, and led 18-6 by the end of the first quarter, with Karli Recker hitting three baskets from three-point range.

The Panthers went on to lead 36-11 at halftime and 54-14 after three periods. Gabrielle Guilford scored nine points, Rebekah Prull had eight and Bronwyn Hodge added seven. Brea Stahlberg had six points and three steals off the bench. Tori McDonald had five assists and three steals.

A key to the win was a team shooting percentage of 54.2, 26-for-48. By contrast, the Panthers shot 34.9 percent in a Jan. 5 win over Northeast, and 20.5 percent in a loss to Cascade Jan. 8.

“I thought we did a better job of attacking the gaps and creating open opportunities to make shots,” Kremer said. “Our pressure led to some easy layups as well.”

The rest of the week wasn’t as good for the Panthers. On Thursday, Maquoketa Valley – ranked first in the state in Class 2A – paid a visit and defeated Monticello 39-24.

Much like the Cascade game the previous Friday, the Panthers got off to s slow start, trailing 9-0 after one quarter and 13-4 early in the second period.

Monticello fought back, getting to within five points after two straight layups by Guilford, but the Wildcats led by eight at halftime, by 12 after three quarters, and inched to the final margin of 15 in the final period.

“It was a good game to find out what we are made of,” coach Kremer said. “We competed at a high level against a very good team for four quarters. I was extremely proud of how we fought back after being down early.”

Guilford had six points and four steals in the game. Hodge had four points and five rebounds, while McDonald had four points and four rebounds. Prull also had four points.

On Friday, Monticello traveled to Bellevue and lost 46-42 in a contest that was close almost all the way. The Comets took an early 9-1 lead and led for most of the first half, but the Panthers rallied to tie it 31-31 late in the third quarter, and trailed by one point with eight minutes to play.

A three-point corner shot from Tori McDonald gave the Panthers a 38-35 lead with 5:39 to go, but the Comets outscored Monticello 11-4 the rest of the way. The Panthers had three possessions in the final minute, trailing by four each time, but couldn’t close the gap.

“We had many opportunities to finish them off, but we missed free throws and some good looks,” Kremer said. “There may have been some very questionable calls that did not go our way. Plus we did not take care of the ball toward the end.”

Guilford had a big night with 26 points, shooting 12-for-13 from the free throw line. Hodge had six points and five rebounds. McDonald had four points, six steals, six assists and four rebounds.

The Panthers came out of the week 8-5, including 5-3 in the River Valley Conference North Division.

“We will bounce back stronger than ever,” Kremer said. “This group has a great work ethic and strong character. These girls are not afraid of working hard and learning.”
