Three wins in a five-day period, including two of them in the River Valley Conference and one in overtime, left the Monticello High School girls basketball team with a 4-0 record through two weeks of the season.

Monticello won two conference games at home, 61-43 against Northeast of Goose Lake Nov. 28 and 65-58 in overtime over West Branch Dec. 1; and then scored a 52-37 non-conference win at Midland Dec. 2.

“We are doing a very good job of executing the offense and playing pretty solid defense,” Monticello coach Donnie Kremer said. “The attitude has been really great as well. The hard work that they have to put into practice is paying off during the games. I also like how we respond to adversity and physical play.”

The Panthers surged to a 30-18 halftime lead against Northeast, and extended it in the second half.

A 27-13 run from the start of the third quarter to midway through the fourth gave Monticello a 57-31 advantage, and the Panthers maintained control.

Lauren Ries scored 22 points, shooting 10-for-16 from the field, to go along with eight steals and four assists. Taylor McDonald had 17 points and seven rebounds. Maddie Fellinger had eight points, eight steals and five assists.

On Dec. 1, the Panthers went into overtime against West Branch in Monticello, and won 65-58. Monticello led 43-32 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Bears posted a 19-8 fourth quarter edge to tie the game 51-51. The Panthers then outscored West Branch 14-7 in the extra session to emerge with the win.

“The West Branch game was our best game to date,” Kremer said. “I thought we played very solid for 90 percent of the game.

“In the last three minutes (of regulation time) we lost their shooters and missed some free throws. In overtime we were able to settle down. We executed very well and did not give their shooters any easy opportunities. Then we made our free throws down the stretch.”

Taylor McDonald had another big game, with 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting, along with seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Ries scored 20 points, including 9-for-12 from the free throw line, and had seven rebounds. Jordan Kuper recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Maddie Lambert had seven points.

Monticello came right back to play a non-conference game at Midland Dec. 2. The Panthers outscored Midland in each quarter, gradually pulling away to a 52-37 victory.

Taylor McDonald had 16 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals in that game. Ries had 13 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists. Kuper had her second double-double in a row, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Fellinger had five points and six rebounds, and Lambert scored five points. Carly Hayen came off the bench to block two shots.
