Panthers' winning season is celebrated

A 16-14 season that included a 13-5 River Valley Conference record was celebrated as the Monticello High School baseball team held its annual awards event Aug. 9 in the MHS Commons.
The Panthers played in Class 3A for the postseason, and lost a narrow 3-2 decision to Western Dubuque in the quarterfinal round.
“I’m super proud of the season they put together,” coach Kolby Harms told the audience. “These guys stood up to the challenge of being in 3A, and they played Western Dubuque right to the end.”
Varsity awards presented that evening are listed below. Junior varsity and freshman-sophomore awards will be announced later.

VARSITY AWARDS
IPSWA All-State – Justin Recker, senior, third team outfielder.
All-District: Justin Recker, senior, first team outfielder; Preston Ries, freshman, second team utility.
River Valley All-Conference
Elite Team – Justin Recker, senior outfielder.
North Division Team – Caleb Gillmore, senior catcher; Caleb Sauser, junior utility; Dylan Roher, sophomore pitcher; Tate Petersen, sophomore utility; Preston Ries, freshman infielder.
Honorable Mention – Tyler Luensman, senior.
Team Awards
Most Valuable – Justin Recker, senior.
Most Improved – Caleb Gillmore, senior.
Rookie of the Year – Cael Sampson, freshman.
Silver Slugger – Justin Recker, senior.
