The Monticello Panthers hope their goal of getting a nine-hole team score in the 170s is coming, but they understand it’s going to take time.

“I think we can compete with a lot of teams if we get down to the 170s,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said. “But somehow we have to get a little more consistency.”

The Panthers had scores of 188 and 190 in a pair of meets on back-to-back days last week.

The 188 came in a home meet against Bellevue, in which the visiting Comets totaled 175. Aaron Gearhart had a strong performance for Monticello, shooting a 39.

“After that we struggled,” Tauke said. “We’ve got to have more (low) scores than Aaron’s 39.”

On April 11, the Panthers zipped down to Fawn Creek in Anamosa to play a triangular meet. Dyersville Beckman won with a team total of 173, Anamosa had 180, and Monticello scored 190.

Nash Sutterman led the Panthers with a 45; Daltyn Kramer and Gearhart each totaled 47.

“When you don’t have a lot of depth, you’ve got to have your top three be pretty consistent,” the coach said, “and we aren’t there yet.”

Monticello played junior varsity matches at both meets, and in each case had just four golfers. Reggie Welter led the JV Panthers in both meets.
