Perfect season for Panther JV

GIRLS BASKETBALL

It wasn’t perfect in terms of the weather – four games were lost due to cancellations – but the Monticello junior varsity girls basketball team made the most of the games they did play, winning all 17 of them.

The unbeaten Panthers closed the campaign with a 34-19 home win over Anamosa Feb. 4.

“The team really grew throughout the season and as individual players,” Monticello coach Chuck Welsch said.

In the final game, Rebekah Prull had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Bronwyn Hodge also had 10 points. Piper Hansen contributed five points, Lydia Recker had four points, five assists and two steals, DeLainy Fellinger had three points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals; and Emma Hynick scored two points.

Monticello outrebounded Anamosa 24-12 including nine offensive boards. For the season, the Panthers averaged 27 rebounds per game, including 11 per game on the offensive boards. The Panthers also scored an average of 38.7 points per game.

“The hard work really paid off,” Welsch said. “Cory Recker (assistant coach) did a great job again helping me out.”
