Three varsity starters from 2016 lead a small but experienced Midland High School girls golf team this spring.

The Eagles, at press time, had just four members on the team, but were hoping for more. They are led by senior Sydney Stender, junior Anna Roseland and sophomore Nicole Guenther. New to the team is sophomore Malinda Schilling.

Scott Ahrendsen, who is in his 28th year as head coach of the team, said the team’s goals are to “get team scores (by having at least four girls play in a meet), compete with as many teams as we can, and recruit people to play.

“We will take anyone willing to play and work at it,” the coach added, “and place them where their performance puts them.”

Roseland is in her third year with the team, while Stender and Guenther are both second-year players.

“They should all be in the 60s or 50s by the end of April,” the coach said, regarding the girls’ scores.

The coach added that he has hopes for this year’s eighth-grade class to add several golfers to next year’s team. In the meantime, he has set a goal for this year’s squad in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

“I would hope to finish in the middle,” Ahrendsen said.
