PREVIEW: Panthers strive for more goals, wins
Ten returning players, including six returning letter-winners, will try to lead the Monticello High School girls soccer team to an improved record this spring.
The Panthers went 1-12 in 2016, but are hoping for better things this time around.
“We have good experience in key positions that will allow us to mentor the newer players,” sixth-year coach Bruce Feuling said, adding that the team’s goals are “Learning to play as a team. Developing and redefining our soccer skills. Having fun and winning some games along the way.”
Monticello returns its starting goalkeeper from last season, junior Cassie Gillmore, who turned back 242 shots on goal last season.
Also back are senior midfielder Cassidy Covington, who scored two goals a year ago; junior defender Isabel Williams, and three players who can play any of the non-goalkeeper positions: seniors Brianna Koppes and Lauren Kurt, and sophomore Megan James.
In all, there are 24 girls out for the team. One of the points of emphasis, Feuling said, will be improving the scoring. Monticello had just 11 goals in 13 matches last year.
“Scoring goals is always a challenge,” Feuling said. “Getting a cohesive front line usually takes some time to develop.”
Monticello will face several strong opponents on this year’s schedule, including Maquoketa, Marion and Vinton-Shellsburg.
Feuling is assisted by Danylle Feuling and Duff Coleman.
