In 2017, Maquoketa Valley’s volleyball team went 13-16 under new coach Brandy Whittenbaugh. With three lost starters from last year’s season, Whittenbaugh will have a few alterations to make.

“We lost two all-conference middles, so we’ll be adjusting players to their new roles,” said Whittenbaugh.

Fortunately, three starters will be returning. These starters include Maci Freiburger (first team), Emerson Whittenbaugh (honorable mention), and Olivia Hoeger.

“Our returning outside hitters are the team’s strengths,” the head coach commented.

Now, with her first year coaching the Wildcats under her belt, four returning letter-winners, and all the extra work the team put in during the off season this summer, Whittenbaugh is optimistic of fulfilling the team’s goal of finishing in the top three in the Tri-Rivers Conference West Division.

Returning letter winners include seniors Maddy Anderegg and Brooke Wilson; junior Lydia Helle; and sophomore Ella Imler.

This year, Starmont is said to be Maquoketa Valley’s strongest opponent, along with Edgewood-Colesburg.

Melissa Dutra will be assisting Whittenbaugh in coaching the volleyball team. This will be her second year as well.
