Primary, General Election nomination papers available

Janine Sulzner, Jones County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, announces that the nomination filing period for candidates for county office will begin Monday, March 2 in the Auditor’s Office and runs until 5 p.m. on Friday, March 20 for non-partisan candidates (and non-party political organization candidates), and until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25 for partisan (i.e. Democrat and Republican) candidates.

County offices that will be on the June 2, 2020 Primary Election ballot are:

• County Supervisor District 1

• County Supervisor District 2

• County Supervisor District 5

• County Auditor

• County Sheriff

Nomination petitions for Republican candidates must contain the signatures of at least 96 eligible electors of Jones County; petitions for Democratic candidates must contain the signatures of at least 73 eligible electors of Jones County. The filing deadline for partisan (i.e. Democrat and Republican) candidates for these offices is 5 p.m. on March 25.

IMPORTANT: Due to a recent change in the law, persons wishing to run as non-partisan candidates (and non-party political organization candidates) for the offices of County Supervisor Districts 1, 2, 5, County Auditor, County Sheriff, Soil & Water Conservation Commissioner, and township offices must now file their nomination papers by 5 p.m. on March 20 in the Auditor’s Office. This filing date is five days earlier than the filing date for partisan candidates.

Nomination petitions for non-partisan candidates (and non-party political organization candidates) for County Supervisor Districts 1, 2, 5, County Auditor, and County Sheriff must contain the signatures of at least 136 eligible electors of Jones County. Nomination papers for candidates for Soil & Water Conservation Commissioner must contain the signatures of at least 25 eligible electors of Jones County. Candidates for township office need only to file an Affidavit of Candidacy by 5 p.m. on March 20. While the filing deadline for these non-partisan, and non-party political organization candidates, is on March 20, these candidates will be listed only on the ballot for the Nov. 3 General Election.

Nomination packets are now available in the Jones County Auditor’s Office, and are also available from links on the home page of the Jones County website (www. jonescountyiowa.org). When obtaining nomination forms from any website, candidates must be careful to select the correct filing status (i.e. partisan for the June Primary, or non-partisan for the November General Election), as some of the required nomination papers are different.
