Four Monticello Panthers earned a trip to district competition during the Class 2A sectional wrestling tournament held Saturday, Feb. 3 at Anamosa High School.

Freshman Kain Luensman (45-1), at 113 pounds; and junior Chase Luensman (44-3) at 132; won their respective weight classes.

Sophomore Alaina Sunlin (35-21), 106 pounds; and junior Lake Stahlberg (26-4), 220, finished second to advance.

Kain Luensman won both of his matches decisively. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, he pinned Matt Hearn of Center Point-Urbana in 2:30, then scored a 10-1 major decision in the finals over Mason Recker of Dyersville Beckman.

“Kain did a great job of taking control of his matches and avoiding mistakes,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “He stayed in great position and maintained a strong and steady pace.”

Chase Luensman won a sectional title for the third straight year. He won by technical fall over Jimmy McDermott of Dubuque Wahlert, by a score of 21-4. In the finals against Grant Hoeger of Beckman, Luensman scored a takedown with 50 seconds to take a 3-1 lead, then held on for a 3-2 victory.

“Chase was the aggressive wrestler throughout his finals match,” the coach said. “He did a nice job of maintaining his composure.”

Stahlberg won his semifinal match by pin over Spencer Schlarmann of Beckman, then was pinned in the finals by Boone McDermott of Wahlert. But when Schlarmann won the third place match, it clinched a spot in the district tournament for Stahlberg.

Sunlin had a trickier path. She won by pin in the semifinals and lost by pin in the finals. She had to wrestle Danil Kobusch of Beckman in a wrestleback match for the true second spot, and made a 12-6 lead stand in a 12-8 victory.

“Lake and Alaina both battled hard throughout the day,” coach Luensman said. “Alaina brought a fire that I haven’t seen for a while. She was determined to make it back to districts.

“Lake did a great job of bouncing back and competing for all six minutes. I was proud of his effort and his poise throughout the day.”

Monticello also had third place finishes from Ethan Tallman at 120, Bo Kramer at 132, and Gavin Holub at 170. Each of them won third places matches but didn’t get the chance to wrestle back for true second.

Tyler Kuper was fourth at 285, and Thomas Broderick placed fifth at 152.

“They all gave everything they had and left it on the mat,” the coach said. “As coaches that is all we can ask.”

The four qualifying Panthers will compete in the district tournament Saturday, Feb. 10 at DeWitt Central, starting at noon.

“We have some great opportunities, but we need a sharp week of practice and we need to take care of all the little things like sleep, nutrition and staying healthy,” the coach concluded. “This team has worked hard, and it will be fun to see how far they want to go.”
