Records fall during outstanding Eagle football season

Football

     Midland’s outstanding football season, which included a 9-3 record and the school’s first-ever game in the UNI-Dome, also included a lengthy list of school and individual records broken.

     Here is the list, provided by Michelle Hansen of Midland High School:

TEAM

     Most total offense in a season – 4,733.

     Most yards passing in a season – 2,684.

     Most points scored in a game – 82.

     Best average scoring in district play – 61 points per game.

     Fewest average points allowed in district play – 36.8.

     Most turnovers caused in a season – 30.

     Most interceptions in a game – 5.

     Most interceptions in a season – 17.

     Fumble recoveries in a season – 13.

     Best win-loss record – 9-3.

INDIVIDUAL

     Most passing yards in a season, Alex Martens, 5,492.

     Most completions in a career, Alex Martens, 282.

     Most touchdown passes in a career, Alex Martens, 70.

     Most receiving yards in a career, Connor Harms, 2,367.

     Most receptions in a career, Connor Harms, 167.

     Most touchdown receptions in a season, Connor Harms, 14.

     Most points scored in a game, Austin Smith, 48.

     Longest punt return, Drew Gravel, 55 yards.

     Longest kickoff return, Austin Smith, 77 yards.

     Most total tackles in a game, Hunter Rushford, 17.

     Most solo tackles in a season, Landon Hunter, 61.

     Most solo tackles in a game, Landon Hunter and Hunter Rushford, 14.

     Most interceptions in a career, Connor Harms, 13.

     Most fumble recoveries in a career, Austin Smith, 5 (tied record).

Girls basketball

     Four games resulted in one win for the Midland girls basketball team last week.

     Midland (1-1, 1-5) traveled to Bellevue to face Marquette Catholic Dec. 2, and lost 43-24. The Mohawks took a 30-11 first half lead on the way to the win. Drew Jensen led the Eagles with 10 points. Callie Markmann had five rebounds. Delanie Uppena and Jensen made five steals apiece.

     The Eagles bounced back to score a 59-26 win Dec. 6 at Clinton Prince of Peace, as Markman had 20 points. Midland jumped to a 28-12 lead in the first half and extended the lead afterward. Jensen scored 15 points, and Libertie Uppena added eight. Delanie Uppena led the team in rebounds with 10, while Libertie Uppena, Emma Paulsen and Markmann had eight apiece. Mikayla Dosland, Jensen and Markmann made four steals each.

     “It was good to get our first win of the year,” Midland coach Nathan Becker said. “Getting 76 shots and 27 offensive rebounds are both keys that we are really focusing on this year.”

     A heartbreaking loss at Central City Dec. 9 followed. Midland led 48-39 after three quarters, but was outscored 15-5 in the final period to lose 54-53. Midland took three shots in the closing seconds in an attempt to win, but none of them fell.

     Libertie and Delanie Uppena each had a double-double for the Eagles; Libertie with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Delanie with 10 points and 19 rebounds. Jensen scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, to go along with eight steals. Markmann had six assists and four steals.

     Midland then played host to Tipton Dec. 10, and fell by a score of 59-50. Tipton jumped to a 17-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 31-21 at halftime. Jensen scored 22 points while shooting 9-for-13 from the field for Midland. Delanie Uppena recorded her second straight double-double, with 10 points and 12 rebounds, along with six steals. Libertie Uppena had eight points and nine rebounds. Markmann had seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.

     “We learned a lot about ourselves in this game, and really grew as a team,” Becker said.

 

Wrestling

     Midland competed in the Zimmerman Invitational Dec. 10 in Maquoketa, and finished fourth among six teams with 101 points. Maquoketa was first with 181, Clinton took second with 113.5, and Davenport Central was third with 108.

     Brett Schoenherr won the championship at 220 pounds for the Eagles, getting two pins, a major decision and a decision.

     Midland also had six wrestlers finish second: Slayder Hansen at 120, Griffen Gravel at 126, Kasper Heiken at 132, Landon Hunter at 160, Jalen Huston at 171 and Ty’Rique Turman at 285. Finishing third were Trevor Gudenkauf at 126 and Brayden Gravel at 138.

 

Boys basketball

     Midland opened its boys basketball season with an overtime loss at home to Bellevue Marquette Dec. 2, by a score of 48-42. Marquette rallied from a 12-point deficit after three quarters to tie the game 41-41 by the end of regulation time.

     Skylar Mullins led Midland in scoring with 14 points, while Connor Harms had 11. Trace Jensen and Mullins had five rebounds apiece, and Jensen made three assists.
