Register for the Jones Co. Coalition 5K run/walk

The Jones County Safe and Healthy Youth Coalition is hosting its third annual “What’s Your Natural High? 5K Run/Walk” on Saturday, May 1, at 9 a.m. at Wapsipinicon State Park.

Packets with a t-shirt, race bib, and other fun items can be picked up between 8 and 8:45 a.m. that day. Participants will have the opportunity to walk or run through the beautiful state park while helping to support the Coalition’s efforts to reduce and prevent youth substance use. B&W Racing Services are providing timing for participants who enjoy competing with others or just going for their personal best.

Please register by April 15 to guarantee a t-shirt in the right size. Registration is open from now until 8 a.m. May 1, the day of the event, but shirts will not be guaranteed.

You can register by going to http://jonescountycoalition.org/event/3rd-annual-whats-your-natural-high-5k-run-walk/, or drop off/mail your registration and entry to the Coalition at 110 S. Williams St., Anamosa, IA 52205.

The cost for adults is $25; and $10 for youth 17 and under.

Last year, the 5K was cancelled due to the pandemic. There is a virtual option this year for those who prefer.

All proceeds go to the Coalition.

The Coalition’s 5K is one its four major fundraising events throughout the year. Fundraising has become even more important since the Coalition’s major grants have ended. Since the Coalition began in 2004, Jones County has seen a 45-percentage point decrease in binge drinking by the county’s 11th grade youth, according to the Iowa Youth Survey. There has also been an 11-percentage point decrease in youth marijuana use. The Coalition knows there is much work to do yet, especially with the concerns of mental health even before the pandemic. The 5K run/walk has more than just the fundraising goal, the Coalition also hopes to highlight safe and natural highs and this year’s theme includes “Living with Purpose – There is S’more to Life,” reminding us of enjoying nature, getting fresh air and healthy exercise, and gathering with friends and family whether camping or enjoying a walk.

Help support the Jones County Coalition and their efforts to create a safe and healthy community for all by registering for the 5K and attending some of their other fundraising events throughout the year. The Coalition’s Annual Purse and Accessory Sale is coming up June 19, followed by its summer garage sale in August, with opportunities to donate to and shop at both. Coalition volunteers look forward to seeing the public in person at these events this spring and summer.
