Results include five wins for JV

BASEBALL

     Monticello’s junior varsity baseball team collected five wins in its first 15 games of the 2017 season.

     The Panthers (5-11) opened the season May 22 at Bellevue, and swept a doubleheader, winning 5-1 and 9-3. Jeff Carlson pitched a two-hitter in the first game, striking out seven and walking none. Monticello had five hits. Hunter Kramer went 1-for-1 and drove in two runs.

     In the second game, the Panthers broke it open with five runs in the fourth inning. Kain Luensman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Chance Janssen and Bo Kramer both went 2-for-3, while Connor Lambert and Justin Recker were 2-for-4. Kain Luensman and Recker doubled. Grahm Schneiter pitched a four-hitter for the win, striking out two. Gage Jacobs had two stolen bases.

     Monticello returned to Bellevue for a single game May 24, and won 8-1 as Tyler Luensman pitched a four-hitter. Lambert and Recker both went 2-for-3. Janssen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Lambert and Recker doubled.

     On May 30, the Panthers played a single game at Wilton, and lost 19-2. Wes Henderson had the lone Monticello hit. Andrew Wall and Hunter Kramer both walked and scored.

     Next, the Panthers traveled to Mid-Prairie for a single game, and lost 12-4. Recker batted 3-for-3 with two doubles.

     Monticello then played host to Vinton-Shellsburg June 2, and lost 10-0. The Panthers had two hits, singles by Henderson and Wall.

     At home against West Branch June 6, the Panthers lost 14-8. Monticello had 12 hits. Going 2-for-2 were Kain Luensman, Bo Kramer and Recker. Jacobs was 2-for-3. Recker had a double. Recker and Kain Luensman shared pitching duties.

     In a doubleheader at Camanche June 7, the Panthers lost 8-0 and 10-0. Kain Luensman and Jacobs hit singles in the first game. In the nightcap, Jacobs hit a double.

     The Panthers played a single game at Tipton June 8, and lost a 2-1 decision. Wall stole home in the fifth inning for the only Monticello run. Lambert and Janssen hit singles. Hunter Kramer was the hard-luck losing pitcher, allowing just two runs on seven hits over five innings.

     Next up was a home game against Midland June 13, which the Panther JV lost 8-5. Highlights for Monticello included a triple by Mason Kraus, and two runs scored by Jacobs. Carlson pitched for the Panthers.

     On June 14, the Panthers played host to Northeast of Goose Lake in a doubleheader, and split the two games, losing 6-5 and winning 9-6. In the first game, Jacobs was 3-for-3 with a triple, a double and three runs scored. Janssen was 1-for-2 with a double. Kain Luensman went 2-for-3. Schneiter also had a hit.

     Monticello jumped to an 8-1 lead after two innings of the second game. Tyler Luensman went 2-for-2 and scored three runs. Bo Kramer had a double. Tyler Luensman was the winning pitcher, with Hunter Kramer picking up a save in relief.

     The Panthers pulled out a 6-5 victory at home against Iowa City Regina June 15. Monticello took a 5-1 lead through three innings, and led 6-3 after four before holding on for the win. Jon Mootz went 3-for-3 with a double, and Recker was 2-for-3. Hunter Kramer pitched for the win.

     At home against Calamus-Wheatland June 16, the Panthers lost 8-2. Tyler Luensman and Adam Schmitt scored the Monticello runs.

     West Liberty came to Monticello June 19 for a single game, and edged the Panthers 3-1. Kraus’ RBI double brought home Kain Luensman with the only Panther run, in the second inning. Hunter Kramer pitched a one-hitter with three strikeouts, but took the loss.
