Zach Reuter made a big early lead stand, going on to win the Handicap Overall division of the Nebraska Youth Open and Under-23 Tour bowling tournament Oct. 2 at Thunderbowl in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The tournament was part of the Nebraska Youth Bowling Partnership series.

Reuter won with a total handicap score of 1638 over eight games, winning the title by four pins.

“It was way too close for comfort,” the 17-year-old from Monticello said. “I was up by nearly 100 pins near the beginning. I started missing spares. I got nervous and in my own head.”

Had it been a scratch tournament, Reuter would have won more easily; his scratch score was 1238, and the next-closest was 1154.

The tournament featured two different oil patterns, a short one and a long one.

“I liked the short pattern a lot more,” he said. “I could throw it right up the five board, and it would hook into place. The long pattern was hard to figure out.”

His scores reflected that; Reuter had a 205 and a 197 on the short pattern. On the long, he had a 184 but the others were all below 150.

Reuter said his next bowling endeavor will be the Monticello High School season that begins in late November.

“I’m excited for the season,” he said. “We’re looking like a pretty good team coming in.”
