Rickardsville struck early, Cascade scored late, and both were able to come away with victories against the Monticello Cubs semi-pro baseball team in recent action.

First, the Cubs (4-5) lost by a score of 9-3 to Rickardsville in the quarterfinal round of the Worthington Tournament June 23. The A’s scored four times in the top of the first inning.

Monticello answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half, and the 4-2 score held up until the fifth inning, when Rickardsville scored twice more. The Cubs again answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but trailed 6-3. The A’s then tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh.

“We didn’t play great in this game,” Cubs player-manager Tanner Felton said. “We had the bases loaded with one out in two straight innings and couldn’t score any runs. It was a tough loss for us since we had a good draw in the tournament.”

The Cubs did have eight hits, led by Tanner Felton and A.J. Reuter, both of whom went 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Parker Kray went four innings and took the loss. Matt Holmes pitched three innings in relief.

At Cascade June 28 in an Eastern Iowa Hawkeye League game, the Cubs lost 7-6 as the Reds rallied from behind.

Monticello took a 2-0 lead on a two-run single by Holmes in the first inning, and scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to lead 5-1. Cascade put together a five-run fifth inning to take the lead, including a two-run homer by Derek Lieurance.

The Reds added a run in the sixth to lead 7-5. The Cubs did score once in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough.

“We started off scoring runs and hitting the ball well,” Tanner Felton said. “Guys had some good at bats and we played good defense early. It’s been tough for us right now hitting with runners in scoring position. It will get better. We need to limit our strikeouts, and we will get out of this funk we have been in this past week.”

Kyle Wright was 3-for-4 at the plate for Monticello, while Tyler Felton and Holmes had two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Tyler Felton took the loss; Parker Kray pitched the sixth inning.
