Ries, Panthers win opener

GIRLS GOLF

Led by two-time state qualifier Lauren Ries and a host of good efforts, the Monticello girls golf team opened its season with a 15-stroke win over Northeast Goose Lake, 191 to 206, April 2 in Preston.

“The kids really played well considering it is early in the year,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “I think, if we can play to this level each meet, we will be very successful.”

Ries was meet medalist with a 41, and the Panthers had five scores under 55.

“Lauren played really well, picking up right where she left off last season,” the coach said.

Freshman Dru Kramer had the Panthers’ second-best score, a 48. Marissa McNally and Lilly Lambert had the other two scores that counted in the Monticello total, each with 51.

“I think the two freshmen (Kramer and Beka Prull) will definitely help out this season,” Steen said. “Lilly Lambert and Marissa McNally played very well. Lydia (Franzenburg) and Courtney (Campbell) played well too. They just had a couple bad holes that raised their scores.

“Overall this is very encouraging for our team.”
