Rural county residents can apply for well-testing grants

Grant money from the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is available for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, for the following:
• Water testing private water wells
• Plugging abandoned private water wells (up to $500)
• Plugging abandoned cisterns (up to $300)
• Reconstruction of private water wells (up to $1,000)
• Well shock chlorination (up to $300)
• Well assessment (up to $500)
To qualify, all work must be performed by a certified well contractor.
Paperwork must be submitted by June 15, 2024, to the office at: Jones County Environmental Health, 105 Broadway Place, Suite 11, Anamosa, IA 52205.
This department recommends yearly water testing. To schedule a water test, call the office between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Homeowners may have their well tested once a year free of charge, provided grant money is still available.
Short-term radon kits are also available in the Environmental Health office.
