Sally’s on Broadway, a popular restaurant in Springville, was burglarized overnight Sunday, March 5. Sally Deeb, the owner, came into work Monday morning, March 6, and found her cash register broken into, as well a safe.

In the safe was a moneybag where Deeb was keeping donations patrons gave for the Austin Strong Foundation, in memory of Austin Smith from Monticello.

Deeb estimates over $1,000 was taken from the Foundation, as well as $8,000 from the restaurant.

Throughout last week, once news hit about the break-in, people started donating money to Sally’s in memory of Austin Smith to make up for the funds that were taken. Over $10,000 has been received thus far.

Over the weekend, Deeb saw a piece of paper attached to her restaurant with a hand-written note on top. The paper was a copy of the article that appeared in the Anamosa Journal-Eureka about the burglary. The note stated: “Bad things happen in 3. This one is No.#1. No#2 more will fall this, Sally Deed.” (Though Sally’s last is name is actually “Deeb.”)

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
