Schoenherr, Huston earn spots in state tournament

MIDLAND RECAP

Wrestling

Senior Brett Schoenherr and freshman Damon Huston will represent the Midland Eagles at the State Class 1A Wrestling Tournament last week, after both won district championships at the Feb. 9 district meet in Jesup.

Schoenherr (39-3) scored two pins to win the 220-pound title, including a pin of East Buchanan’s Luke Recker at 5:55 in the finals.

Huston (42-1) also won with two pins, closing out the title with a pin of Jaymus Wilson, Alburnett, in 4:52.

Griffin Gravel competed in the 126-pound weight class at districts, and was third. He lost a semifinal match, won his third place match, but because his semifinal opponent lost in the finals, Gravel didn’t get the chance to wrestle back for a true second spot. He finished at 34-7.

As a team, the Eagles were third with 50 points. Don Bosco was the runaway team champion with 194, and Dyersville Beckman was second with 56.5.

Huston and Schoenherr will compete at State Thursday, Feb. 14, in the 1:30 p.m. session at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Correction

In the Midland Recap of last week, the Express reported that Midland had two sectional champions; there were actually three. Senior Griffin Gravel was sectional champion at 126 pounds.

     The Express regrets the error.
