Scott Brighton, Council Ward 1 (to fill vacancy)

Scott Brighton

     Address: Park Drive

Why did you want to run for city council? I was appointed to fill the vacancy in Ward 1. I have enjoyed my short time on the council, and feel that I have learned a lot but I’m still learning every day.

I think it’s a great opportunity to give back to a community. Public service is something I would hope everyone would want to do. I encourage everyone reading this to put your name on the line and run for public office or serve on a community board.

What are some challenges/issues the city will face in the near future? Monticello will face numerous challenges in the near future with the building of a new sewer plant, housing shortages, and many streets improvements that are needed.

Monticello has a lot of good things going for it. What would you like to improve on or change? There are, in fact, a lot of good things happening in Monticello, but there is much more that we could do. For example, adding more trails for citizens. We are in need of housing, and I would love to find a way for the city to work with developments around town. Maybe help with infrastructure and some engineering ideas to help promote housing developments.

What goals do you have for Monticello as a city council member? My goals for Monticello are to build a community people all over the state want to model after. I would like to build the tax base through residential and commercial growth. I would like to see more developments in the Parks and Rec programs, to make our community a place where people want to visit and move to.

There is a shortage of decent, affordable housing in Monticello. This impacts attracting new residents, which increases the city’s tax base. What could be done to bring new people to town? There is a shortage of not only affordable housing, but all housing. Like I stated earlier, I would like to see the city work with developers and build not only for residential housing, but also commercial projects. A strong chamber of commerce, a well-managed Parks and Rec department with goals and visions for the future, and a city council that listens to its community members and is fiscally responsible for all spending can all work together to help with a housing shortfall. We can all encourage developers to build new developments and make our city grow. We need to generate excitement about Monticello to get others to join our community.
