Season ends for Wildcat wrestlers

     Maquoketa Valley’s wrestling season came to an end Feb. 8 in the Class 1A sectional tournament at East Buchanan in Winthrop.

     The Wildcats finished in a tie for sixth place as a team, with 67 points. Don Bosco of Gilbertville was the team champion with 293.5, and Dyersville Beckman was second with 180.

     Three MV wrestlers had third place finishes: Tim Harmon at 170 pounds, Evan Elgin at 182, and Carter Kruse at 195. Devin Smith was fourth at 220, and Michael Schaul placed fifth at 138.

    

Boys basketball

     Maquoketa Valley picked up one boys basketball victory in three recent Tri-Rivers Conference games.

     A trip to Central City Jan. 31 resulted in a 53-44 loss for MV, which was outscored 27-21 in the second half. Andrew Holtz scored 13 points and contributed six rebounds and five assists. Avery Holtz scored 12 points. A.J. Ambundo grabbed six rebounds.

     On Feb. 4, Maquoketa Valley (6-7, 9-10) was dealt a 77-44 loss to Alburnett in Delhi. The Pirates outscored MV 28-12 in the second quarter to take a 42-18 halftime lead. Despite the loss, Andrew Holtz scored 15 points, and Avery Holtz added 13. Ambundo chipped in with nine points and four rebounds. Miguel Bojorquez and Andrew Holtz had two assists apiece. Landen Deutmeyer made two steals, and Devante Strickland blocked a shot.

     The Wildcats bounced back with a 38-17 win at Starmont Feb. 7, as Andrew Holtz poured in 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Avery Holtz had seven points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Ambundo had seven rebounds and five points.

 

Girls basketball

     Maquoketa Valley played host to third-ranked North Linn Jan. 28, and the visiting Lynx pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 47-37 win. Leading the Wildcats (11-2, 16-2) was Taya Tucker, who had 13 points and eight rebounds. Ella Imler had nine points, three assists and three steals. Kennedy Rausch came off the bench to score six points. Carissa Sabers had three assists.

     At Central City Jan. 31, Tucker had a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds in MV’s 48-28 win. Brooke Elgin had 19 points and nine rebounds. Imler made six assists. The team also had 12 steals, led by Tucker with four, Brooke Elgin and Imler with three apiece. Trista Elgin and Tucker had two assists each.
