Sectionals end Panthers' season

BOYS GOLF

Monticello had respectable performances in a pair of back-to-back postseason meets, but wasn’t able to prevent its boys golf season from coming to an end.

The Panthers competed in the Class 2A sectional tournament Thursday, May 10 at Dyersville Country Club. Monticello needed a top-two finish to advance to this week’s district tournament, but finished fourth with a score of 347. Waterloo Columbus shot 326 and Cascade had 335 to advance as teams. Dyersville Beckman was third with 338.

“We really thought, going in, that we had a chance,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said. “We played pretty well.”

Kegan Arduser shot an 80 – his career-best 18-hole score – but was four shots out of an individual district qualifying spot. Connor Lambert had an 88, Hunter Kramer shot 89 and Justin Recker had a 90.

After nine holes, there were four teams within four shots of the second team qualifying spot – including Monticello – but Cascade prevailed.

The previous day, the Panthers competed in the River Valley Conference Meet at Muscatine. Monticello finished sixth with 360 – Wilton was conference champion with 331 – but the result showed a marked improvement from last year, when the Panthers were 11th in the RVC.

Monticello beat all of the remaining North Division teams, and finished ahead of two South Division teams as well.

Seniors Nash Sutterman and Arduser led the Panthers, with each shooting an 87.

“We had good senior leadership,” Tauke said.

The team’s goal was four scores in the 80s, but that was tricky on a difficult course, which had “lots of trouble,” the coach said.

“We had our share of penalty strokes,” he said.

Prior to the post-season meets, the Panthers scored a 177 to 189 win at Bellevue May 7, with Connor Lambert finishing second overall with a 41.

“This course had a lot of elevation changes,” Tauke said. “I’m really happy with how we progressed in that area.”

Monticello finished the season with a record of 23-16, factoring in teams the Panthers defeated and lost to in tournaments.

They will lose seniors Arduser, Sutterman and Kirklen Kiburz to graduation.

“As seniors they needed to step up, and I think for the most part they did,” Tauke said. “They played very, very well at times.”

The Panthers will have four of their top six players returning.
