Seventh-graders finish undefeated

BOYS BASKETBALL RECAP

Seventh-grade

     The Monticello seventh-grade boys basketball team closed out the season Feb. 26 with a trip to Dyersville to play Beckman.

     The Red team defeated Beckman 56-20 to end the season undefeated at 11-0. Team members include Cael Sampson, Peyton Schilling, Preston Ries, Jonah Luensman, Cole Welter, Easton Prull, Blaine Brighton, Connor Jordan, Malcolm Clark, Zach Yates and Peyton Speltz.

     The White team won its game 24-16 to finish 9-0-1, and the Black completed the sweep of Beckman with a 28-8 victory to finish 3-0. Members of the White and Black teams are: Keaton Hermsen, Sawyer Brokaw, Baylor Holub, A.J. Phelps, Deivid Becerra, Jayshon Simms, Dawson Ricklefs, Dylan Monk, Carson Cox, Peyton Speltz, Brady Hayen, Cameron Osterkamp and Zach Yates.

     The teams are coached by Joe Steen and Kim McQuillen.

 

Eighth-grade

     Monticello’s eighth-grade boys basketball teams faced four opponents in a span of five days in recent action, winning six of eight total games.

     Monticello played host to Anamosa Feb. 18 in three games, winning them all. The A team scored a 55-13 triumph. Tate Petersen led the way with 14 points, Ian Temple scored nine, Caelum Jones had eight, Dylan Roher had seven, Gage Guilford had six, Kyler Husmann had five, Austin Kurt had four, and Deacon Besler had two.

     The B team won 33-22 with a balanced scoring attack. Scoring were Chesney Capron with eight, Christian Castillo with seven, Kole Weber with six, and Joel Arduser, Cord Nietert and Besler with four apiece.

     In the C game, the Panthers won 30-16 as Connor Sauser scored 10 points. Getting four points apiece were Elias Etzel, Cole Nietert, Cord Nietert, Nathan Sauser and Weber. Arduser added two points.

     On Feb. 19, the Panthers played host to Northeast of Goose Lake, winning two games. The A team won 55-13, as Petersen and Temple had 15 points apiece and Jones added 12. Kurt scored four, Roher and Husmann scored three each, Guilford had two, and Besler had one.

     The Panthers played host to Camanche in an A game only, and lost 44-37 in overtime. Petersen scored 13 points, Temple had 12, Guilford had eight, while Roher and Jones added two apiece.

     Next, Monticello played host to North Cedar Feb. 22, splitting two games. The A team won 63-40 as Petersen scored 27 points and Temple had 17. Adding four points apiece were Guilford, and Husmann. Cord Nietert and Kurt had two points each.

     In the B game, Monticello lost 18-10. Scoring for the Panthers were Besler with four, and Cole Nietert, Nathan Sauser and Connor Sauser with two apiece.
