Seventh-graders keep winning
Seventh-grade team
The Monticello seventh-grade boys basketball teams went undefeated in a stretch of recent games against seven opponents.
The Panthers played host to rival Anamosa Feb. 8, and all three Monticello teams were big winners. The Red team won 67-27, thanks to 27 field goals, including five three-point shots.
White Team I won 37-21, using a 21-point second half to break the game open. White Team II won 50-11.
At Bellevue Feb. 14, the Panthers swept two more games. The Red team led by six at halftime, but good defense in the second half led to a 48-22 win, allowing just six second-half points.
The White team pulled out a 14-12 victory.
On Feb. 15, the Monticello teams won twice more against Bellevue. The Red won 37-14, extending a defensive streak that has allowed just 20 points over the past six quarters.
The White also defeated Bellevue, 17-10.
On Feb. 18, Monticello traveled to Anamosa and swept the Blue Raiders. The Red team used two balanced halves to defeat the Raiders 51-26. The White team won a close game 26-21. The Black team also prevailed, 50-13.
Monticello played two games at Northeast of Goose Lake Feb. 19, winning both. The Red team limited the Rebels to nine field goals in a 40-22 win. The White team opened up a huge lead early on the way to a 48-21 win.
Back home Feb. 21, the Panthers played a single game against Camanche, and the Red team won 54-14 after taking a 33-6 halftime lead.
The seventh-graders picked up two more wins Feb. 22 at North Cedar. The Red team overcame foul trouble and several missed layups to win 47-32. The White team, which had tied North Cedar earlier in the season, won 35-14.
The Monticello Red team has a record of 10-0; the White is 8-0-1.
Eighth-grade team
Monticello’s eighth-grade boys basketball team played at Bellevue Feb. 15. The A team won 50-28, as Tate Petersen scored 19 points and Gage Guilford added 14. Dylan Roher had five points, Caelum Jones and Kyler Husmann scored four apiece, and Ian Temple and Christian Castillo had two points each.
The Panthers lost the B game 15-12. Scoring for Monticello were Kole Weber with four points, and Joel Arduser, Cole Nietert, Christian Castillo and Cord Nietert had two apiece.
