Sheriff's Report

     A single-vehicle rollover accident took place on Jan. 1 at 3:20 p.m. on 150th Avenue. Marion Gearhart Dirks, 72, of Monticello was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport when he began to fishtail on the snow and ice-covered road. Dirks overcorrected and rolled into the ditch. No injuries were reported. His vehicle sustained an estimated $5,000 in damages.

     A single-vehicle rollover took place on Jan. 1 at 3:30 a.m. on County Road X-31. Douglas Jon Hallowell, 38, of Wheatland was driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra Double C when he lost control and entered the ditch, which was a steep embankment. Hallowell’s vehicle rolled multiple times and came to rest on the driver’s side. Hallowell was located in a nearby creek, passed out. He was transported by Anamosa Ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for his injuries. Hallowell’s vehicle sustained an estimated $15,000 in damages.

     A two-vehicle accident took place on Dec. 31 at 1:18 p.m. on Hardscrabble Road. Mason Jay Newhard, 21, of Center Junction was driving a 2014 Kia Forte when he attempted to turn left into a driveway. As he applied his brake, he began sliding on the ice-covered roadway. Kassandra Ann Caspers, 24, of Olin was driving a 2011 VW Jetta as she came up behind Newhard. She also applied her brake and began sliding as well and was unable to avoid contact with Newhard’s vehicle. Newhard’s vehicle came to rest in the ditch. Both drivers were uninjured. Casper’s vehicle sustained an estimated $6,000 in damages, while Newhard’s vehicle sustained $5,000 in damages.

     A car versus deer accident took place on Dec. 29 at 6:15 p.m. on Highway 151. Florence Jean Prull, 82, of Monticello was driving a 2014 Buick Encore when she encountered a deer in the roadway. No injuries were reported. Prull’s vehicle sustained an estimated $5,000 in damages.

     A two-vehicle accident took place on Dec. 28 at 3:11 p.m. on Highway 151. Matthew Duane Berry, 43, of Cedar Rapids was driving a 2000 Honda Civic north in the left-hand lane as he attempted to pass a 2015 semi tractor trailer driven by Ryan Christopher Oldfather, 35, of Walford. Berry lost control due to ice on the roadway and spun out, striking the semi. Both drivers were uninjured. Berry’s vehicle sustained an estimated $3,000 in damages. The semi sustained $500 in damages.
