Sheriff's Report

     A two-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 7 at 7:42 a.m. on Highway 151. Anthony Lloyd Petty, 45, of Dubuque was driving a 2008 Saturn Aura XE when he attempted to pass another vehicle on the ice-covered roadway. As Petty passed Donald J. Klinger, 70 of Galena, driving a 2015 Mercedes Utility, he lost control and hit Klinger. Both vehicles entered the north ditch on the southbound side. Neither driver was injured. Petty’s vehicle sustained approximately $2,000 in damages, while Klinger’s vehicle sustained $4,000 in damages. There was also $50 in damages to a steel highway marker owned by the Iowa DOT. Petty was cited for driving while license under suspension, and was found to be at fault for failure to maintain control.

     A one-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 6 at 3:44 p.m. on Highway 151. Lucy Kathryn Yueman Stevens, 22, of Iowa City was driving a 2017 Subaru Forester when she lost control due to the icy conditions on the roadway. Stevens left the roadway, ending up in the north ditch. No injuries were reported. Stevens’ vehicle sustained approximately $3,000 in damages.

     A one-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 6 at 3:09 p.m. on County Road E-16. Elise Noel Skelton, 16, of Central City was driving a 2007 Chrysler Sebring when she went to pass a semi. The roadway was mostly covered in sleet and ice, causing Skelton to lose control. Skelton entered the south ditch, rolling her vehicle, which came to rest on the driver’s side. Skelton and her two passengers were all uninjured. Her vehicle sustained approximately $2,500 in damages.

     A one-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 7 at 7:27 a.m. near Highway 151 and 150th Street. Julianne E. Leow, 33, of Brownsburg, Ind., was driving a 2015 Kia Soul when she lost control due to the icy roadway. Leow ‘s vehicle left the roadway and entered the north ditch. No injuries were reported. Her vehicle sustained approximately $1,500 in damages.

     A two-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. on Highway 151. Tracy L. Chappell, 53, of Monticello was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger southbound on the highway. Corey M. Renfer, 19, of Coon Rapids was driving a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, also southbound. Renfer lost control in the slush and ice on the roadway, making contact with Chappell’s vehicle. No injuries were reported for either driver. Both vehicles sustained approximately $1,000 in damages.

     A two-vehicle accident took place on Feb. 13 at 12:53 p.m. near Highway 151 and County Home Road E-23. Tyler Lawrence Schorg, 27, of Monticello was driving a 2015 Toyota Rav4 when he attempted to pass a semi on a snow and ice-covered road. The 2017 Kenworth Semi was driven by Russell Allen Schimelpfening, 60, of Hot Springs, Ark. Schorg lost control and slid toward the front passenger side of the semi, where the front of the semi collided with the rear. Schorg then slid to the right side of the road where it collided with a snow bank. Both drivers were evaluated by Anamosa Ambulance and denied transport to a hospital. Schorg was cited for unsafe passing. His vehicle sustained approximately $15,000 in damages. Schimelpfening’s semi sustained $5,000 in damages.
