Sheriff's Report

A one-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 14 at 4:12 p.m. on Lead Mine Road. Caleb John Mehaffy, 30, of Cedar Rapids was driving a 2007 Chevy Impala when he lost control. He overcorrected the vehicle, went up an embankment, causing his vehicle to roll over. He told the Sheriff’s Deputy that another vehicle cut him off, causing him to lose control. Mehaffy sustained minor injuries, and refused medical treatment. Damage to his vehicle was estimated at $2,000. He was cited for no insurance and failure to maintain control. 

A one-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 16 at 10 p.m. on Highway 151. Denise Mary Miossi, 57, of Monticello was driving a 2013 Ford Taurus northbound when she ran over a large metal bracket, likely belonging to a trailer. At the last second, Miossi swerved to the right to avoid the object, but ended up damaging her undercarriage, causing two flat tires. No injuries were reported. Miossi’s vehicle sustained approximately $1,500 in damages. 

A one-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 20 at 9:40 a.m. on Highway 151. Rosa Marie Kapparos, 22, of Sherrill was driving a 2000 Toyota Echo northbound when she began to hydroplane. Kapparos lost control and slid sideways into the ditch. She ran over a road marker and a road sign. No injuries were reported. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $2,000. There was also $100 in damages to the road signs. 

A car versus deer accident took place on Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. on Highway 136. Charlene Risden French, 49, of Onslow was driving a 2010 BMW 328XI when she encountered a deer in the roadway. She swerved to miss the deer and went into the ditch, hitting a traffic sign French then went over a farm driveway and re-entered traffic. No injuries were reported. Her vehicle sustained an estimated $3,000 in damages. There was also $500 in damages to the sign. 

A car versus deer accident took place on Sept. 23 at 1:15 p.m. on Highway 38. James Anthony Lange, 80, of Bettendorf was driving a 2004 BMW R1150GS (motorcycle) when he encountered a deer in the roadway. Lange sustained serious injuries, and was transported by Air Care to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids. His vehicle sustained an estimated $2,000 in damages. 

A two-vehicle accident took place on June 22 at 8:38 p.m. on County Home Road E-23. Brayden Spencer Orcutt, 19, of Anamosa was driving a 2015 Toyota Yaris westbound. Joseph Jay Marugg, 44, of Monticello was driving a 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 eastbound. Marugg crossed the centerline, and the two vehicles collided. Orcutt’s vehicle ended up in the ditch. He was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by the Anamosa Fire Department. Orcutt was flown to St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids via Lifeguard due to the severity of his injuries. Marugg was transported to Jones Regional Medical Center for possible injuries. He was later cited for OWI 1st offense (with a BAC of .114%) and driving on wrong side of two-way highway. Damage to Marugg’s vehicle was estimated at $3,000. Damage to Orcutt’s vehicle was estimated at $8,000. 

A two-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 26 at 10:13 a.m. on Highway 38. Juan M. Galvez Ibarra, 43, of North Liberty was driving a 2014 Nissan Sentra northbound, as Donald Laverne Naylor, 79, of Oxford Junction was driving a 2015 Chevy Silverado, also northbound. Galvez Ibarra turned right onto County Road E-17 as Naylor hit his passenger side door. No injuries were reported. Damage to Galvez Ibarra’s vehicle was estimated at $2,000. 

A two-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 26 at 3:29 p.m. near County Road X-31 and 150th Street. Joseph Fredrick Woodard, 54, of Anamosa was driving a 2016 Western Star semi, stopping to turn. Lilly Ann Machart, 16, of Anamosa was driving a 2006 Toyota Camry and didn’t see Woodard’s turn signal due to the dust from the gravel roadway. The two vehicles collided. No injuries were reported. Woodard’s vehicle sustained approximately $200 in damages. Machart’s vehicle sustained $5,000 in damages. 

A single-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 28 at 12:08 p.m. on Highway 136. James Richard Chote, 43, of Clarence was driving a 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan northbound when his vehicle shut down. Flames began to emit from the engine. No injuries were reported. Chote’s vehicle sustained approximately $15,000 in damages. 

A single-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 30 at 5:03 p.m. on County Road E-45. Thelma Lorraine Rutherford, 69, of Cedar Rapids was driving a 2004 Honda Accord eastbound when she hit the gravel shoulder and lost control. She over-corrected a couple of times before entering the ditch on the south side of the road. No injuries were reported. Damage to Rutherford’s vehicle was estimated at $1,500. 

A single-vehicle accident took place on Sept. 30 at 10:35 p.m. near County Road E-45 and 110th Avenue. Cayden Michael Miller, 16, of Olin was driving a 2007 Nissan Maxima when he hit a hay bale in the roadway. Miller’s vehicle sustained approximately $3,000 in damages. No injuries were reported.
