Smoke alarms save lives

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

Last fall at Midland Elementary School, we have a fifth-grade classmate die a tragic death in a fire. This impacted our school community. In Eastern Iowa, seven people died in fires in one week. We would like to reduce the number of deaths from fires. Fire alarms should be on every floor of your house.

A house fire happens every 87 seconds in the U.S. A house fire doubles in size every minute. Smoke alarms reduce the chance of death in a house fire by 50 percent. Every home needs working smoke alarms. Never disable a smoke alarm while cooking. You also need to replace your smoke alarms every 10 years because they have an expiration date. Check to make sure your smoke alarms have batteries and are working. If they don’t, replace them. Smoke alarms can save your life.
