Sophomores go 3-3 in six matches

Sophomore team

     Four events in the space of seven days made it a hectic week for the Monticello sophomore volleyball team in recent action. The Panthers wound up splitting six total matches.

     The Panthers played at Anamosa Sept. 10, and swept the match in two sets, 25-21, 25-23. Madison Butterworth had five kills and two blocks for Monticello, and Jaelyn Aitchison had 10 assists, 13 digs and two aces. Brea Stahlberg had seven digs and two aces. Emma Sperfslage had six digs. Piper Hansen had five digs, two kills and two aces. Aleasha Schilling had three digs and two kills. Kylee Van Dorn had two kills, and Reagan Schneiter had one.

     On Sept. 12, Monticello played host to Northeast of Goose Lake, and swept the Rebels 25-17, 25-23. Sperfslage had 24 digs in that match, and Schilling had 14. Aitchison had four assists and four digs. Hansen had four digs and three aces. Butterworth had four aces and three digs. Schneiter and Van Dorn had two kills apiece, and Stahlberg had two digs.

     The sophomores also competed in Monticello’s junior varsity tournament Sept. 14, and came away with one win in three matches. The Panthers lost to North Linn by scores of 11-21, 16-21. Hansen recorded six digs and four kills. Aitchison had five assists. Butterworth had four kills, two blocks and two digs. Sperfslage had four digs, while Schneiter and Schilling had two apiece. Van Dorn made two assists.

     Against Cascade, Monticello won the first set 21-18 before losing 16-21, 9-15. Butterworth had three kills and 10 digs. Sperfslage had nine digs. Aitchison had 13 digs and nine assists. Hansen had four kills and two assists. Schilling had two kills and three digs. Schneiter had four kills, and Schillling added two.

     The Panthers ended the tournament with a three-set win over Northeast, losing 18-21 but then winning 21-12, 15-9. Hansen contributed five kills, 11 assists and seven digs. Aitchison had four kills, seven assists and six digs. Sperfslage had seven digs. Stahlberg had five digs and two kills. Schilling had three digs, and Van Dorn had two. Butterworth served two aces.

     Next, the sophomore Panthers played at Center Point-Urbana Sept. 16, and lost by scores of 17-21, 21-19, 6-15. Schneiter had five kills for Monticello. Aitchison had eight assists, two kills and two digs. Schilling had five digs and two kills. Hansen had three digs and two kills. Stahlberg had two digs. Getting one kill apiece were Hailey Wilson and Van Dorn.

 

Freshman team

     Monticello traveled to Center Point-Urbana for a Sept. 16 match, and won one of four sets. The scores were 12-21, 8-21, 15-7, 2-15. Courtney Thies served 9-for-10 with five aces and two kills. Marisa Grant served 8-for-8 and had four digs. Olivia Zimmerman had three kills and four digs. Mia Jaeger had three assists and three digs. Serena Brokaw had three digs.

 

Eighth-grade team

     Monticello played at Dyersville Beckman Sept. 16 in two separate matches. In the first match, Monticello lost two of three, with scores of 17-21, 19-21, 15-13. Lacie Koppes served 7-for-7 with four aces, and had five kills. Jordan Fangmann had four digs and two aces. Emma Porter had six assists and two aces. Sami McElmeel had three assists. Kendra Mescher had five kills. Keziah McQuillen had three kills, two digs, and served 6-for-6. Kinzi Schlarmann had three digs.

     In the second match, the Panthers won two of five sets, with scores of 14-16, 15-10, 8-15, 8-15, 11-5. Taylor Gassman had four assists. Gabi Barnhart had two kills and two assists. Michelle Stoll had two aces. Raegan LaGrange had two kills. Kendra Jacobs had two aces. Brenna Wilson served 6-for-7.

 

Seventh-grade team                                              

     The Panthers played three matches at home against Dyersville Beckman Sept. 16. In the first match, Monticello swept the Trailblazers 21-5, 21-10, 15-12. Jayden Kuper served 23-for-24 with 13 aces, and had two kills. Mya Hansen served 14-for-15 with eight aces. Madilynn Kromminga had four kills and four aces. Hailey Henderson had two assists.

     In the second match, Monticello won two of three, with scores of 21-12, 14-21, 15-8. Lydia Ahlrichs served 9-for-10 with four aces, Natalie Henderson served 4-for-5 with two aces, and Seneca Freeze served 7-for-8.

     Monticello also won two out of three in the third match, 21-16, 22-24, 15-6. Kylie Bauer had five aces and two kills. Serenity Reynolds and Miranda Rieken each had two aces and one kill. Alexia Kracht served 6-for-8.
