South Division teams, Anamosa hand losses to MHS
Monticello faced a pair of South Division teams in the River Valley Conference last week, and wound up with a pair of losses: 5-2 at West Liberty June 19, and 10-2 at Durant June 22.
Between those games, the Panthers faced neighboring rival Anamosa, and lost a 14-11 decision.
In the June 19 game, West Liberty jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, then extended it to 3-0 in the third.
The Panthers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Shay Stephen led off with a double, went to third on a single by Taylor McDonald, and scored on an error. McDonald later scored because of another West Liberty error to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Comets picked up two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, however, and went on to win.
“We need to take advantage of our scoring opportunities,” Monticello coach Bret McDonald said. “But West Liberty really had good defense. Their shortstop, third baseman and catcher are all really good players. They just didn’t make mistakes.”
Caitlyn Cruise pitched and took the loss, allowing three earned runs and striking out two. Taylor McDonald and Stephen both finished 2-for-3. Jacqueline Petersen hit a double.
Monticello then played a wild game at Anamosa June 20, falling 14-11, due mostly to the Blue Raiders’ 11-run, fifth inning.
The Panthers led 9-1 in the top of the fourth inning and looked as though they were extending it to 11-1, but a ball hit to center field was ruled a catch, rather than a hit, and turned into a double play.
“That was a huge turning point,” McDonald said.
Anamosa came back after that, with a run in the bottom of the fourth and the 11-run fifth, in which the Raiders had nine hits, to take a 13-9 lead. Monticello got single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn’t catch up.
Jaelynn Kraus batted 3-for-5 with a double and two runs batted in. Rylee Warthen had a solo home run in the third inning, and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sydney Hansen was 3-for-5, while Taylor McDonald and Lauren Ries both went 2-for-2, with two RBIs apiece. Aspen Gillmore and Petersen also knocked in runs for the Panthers.
“We hit the ball really well, but had 12 runners left on base,” the coach said.
On Thursday, June 22, the Panthers traveled to Durant for an RVC game, and lost 10-2. Durant scored in five of its six innings at the plate, including a four-run third inning that made the score 7-2.
Monticello scored both of its runs in the top of the third inning. With bases loaded and none out, Tori McDonald hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Lauren Ries. Warthen followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Stephen.
The Panthers had eight hits. Hansen went 2-for-3. Cruise pitched and took the loss.
