Blackberries

event to be held

Have you ever picked wild blackberries? Join Jones County naturalist Michele Olson, on Saturday, August 12 at 1 p.m. in the Central Park Nature Center. You’ll learn the basics of blackberries as we identify and pick blackberries.

Take home some “berry” delicious blackberry recipes. We’ll also take a quick look at some other Iowa wild edibles along the way.

For protection from thorns wear close-toed shoes, jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt. Don’t forget your insect repellent, sunscreen, and some containers to put your blackberries in.

For information, please contact Michele Olson at 319-481-7987.

Annual river

cleanup set

Join the Jones County naturalist and intern at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, as we canoe the Maquoketa River from the Dunlap Park Access to the Mon Maq Dam River Access.

Our mission, if you choose to accept it, is to clean up the Maquoketa as we paddle, and enjoy good company and the beauty of the river. Garbage bags and some buckets will be provided. Participants should bring their own gloves and wear clothing and footwear that can get dirty and wet. Don’t forget a sack lunch, drinking water, and sunscreen. Participants should bring their own canoes, if available. A few canoes are available for use if your family does not have one. In addition, canoes are available for rent from Outback Canoe Rental.

Please pre-register and request a canoe for use for this event by contacting Michele at 319-481-7987, prior to 4 p.m. on Aug. 14. Float and cleanup are dependent on the weather and safe water levels.
