to absorb

MYBSA leagues;

signups set

     The Monticello Parks and Recreation Department has announced that it will be absorbing the operations of the youth baseball and softball programs from the MYBSA.

     The department has changes in mind, and plans to implement them immediately. Those include moving to a divisional breakdown of PreK-K (T-ball), Grades 1-3 (Pee-Wee), Grades 4-6 (Little League), the use of pitching machines in the two older divisions, and the elimination of having to travel or bring outside communities to town for rec games.

     Registration for the program will be Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, March 1 from noon to 7 p.m. Those interested in coaching or assisting with a team are encouraged to stop by and complete a volunteer coaching application.

Monticello to

host Kids Track

Championships

     The Monticello Parks and Recreation Department will host a local event as part of the Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships Monday, May 14.

     Kids ages 7-14 are eligible to compete in this free event. Winners at the local event will advance to the state championships in Marshalltown on Saturday, June 9.

     Events include the 50-meter dash, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1600-meter run, 4x100-meter relay, standing long jump, and softball throw.

     Nearly 50 communities around Iowa, with approximately 5,000 participants, will compete statewide.

     Welter Storage of Monticello topped a field of 11 ice fishing teams in the annual Heartland Acres Ice Fishing Derby Sunday, Feb. 12 on Swan Lake in Independence.

     Welter Storage won with a total weight of 22 pounds, nine ounces. Second place went to Dunlap Motors with a total of eight pound; in third was ECIREC at six pounds, six ounces.
