Gadient qualifies

for NAIA indoor

     Monticello High School graduate Rachel Gadient, a junior at Mount Mercy University, qualified for the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships in the pentathlon.

     Gadient achieved a personal best score of 3170 during the St. Ambrose Invitational Jan. 26 in Davenport, meeting the NAIA “B” qualifying standard. She also qualified in the long jump with a personal best mark of 5.53 meters.

     The women’s indoor track and field pentathlon consists of the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and 800-meter run.

     The national meet will be Feb. 28-March 2 at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.

 

Bird count and

open house set

     Need to get out of the house? Looking for a fun weekend activity with the kids? Mark your calendar and bring the whole family to the Central Park Nature Center Winter Open House & Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday, Feb. 16  from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

     Hone your bird identification skills by observing birds at the Nature Center feeders and learn how you can participate in the 2019 Great Backyard Bird Count. Take our winter bird identification quiz to win a prize.  Want to learn how to identify your winter birds? Join us for a winter bird identification PowerPoint presentation in the Nature Center lower level at 1:30 p.m.

     Dress to spend a little time in the out-of-doors and try your skills at snowshoeing with your family or, if no snow, try your luck at finding a shed deer antler. Then warm up in the Central Park Nature Center as you enjoy a warm bowl of beef stew and a yummy dessert bar (free will donations accepted). Friends of Jones County Conservation and Nature Center will be offering lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Nature Centers lower level.

     Check out the Nature Centers newest exhibits, test your senses at the “Mystery Box,” make a pinecone birdfeeder to take home, and watch the Nature Center animals eat their lunch (10:30 a.m.).

Mini-Cat wrestling

meet set for Feb. 17

     The Maquoketa Valley Athletic Boosters are hosting their annual Mini-Cat Wrestling Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 17 for grades pre-K through eighth grade.

     The tournament will be held at Maquoketa Valley High School at 107 South St in Delhi.  Tournament format will be a four-person round robin with trophies or medals awarded to all four places. There is a newly added Girls Division this year. There will also be a team trophy competition.

     The tournament was rescheduled from Jan. 19, when it had to be postponed due to inclement weather.
