Starlighters hosts cookie recipe contest, bake-off

Starlighters II Theatre is hosting a chocolate cookie recipe contest and bake-off to promote an upcoming production of “The Kitchen Witches” by Caroline Smith. The production runs April 6-9 and 13-15. Recipe submissions are open now through March 3. The top two recipe submissions will be selected by judges from Starlighters and will be made at the cookie bake-off on March 17 at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Community Center in Anamosa.

Judges at the bake-off will include actors from the cast of “The Kitchen Witches” (Nancy Collell and Mary Sue Vernon), representatives from Starlighters, and the general public present at the event.

The winner will be chosen by a paper ballot vote and will receive two complementary tickets to a performance of “The Kitchen Witches” and an official Kitchen Witches apron. The runner up will receive an official Kitchen Witches apron.

During the event on March 17, entries for a door prize drawing will be available to all attendees. Prizes will include kitchen-themed items including a cookbook, wooden spoons and spatulas, and an official Kitchen Witches apron. This event will be free and open to the public.

Anyone interested in submitting a recipe should visit www.starlighters.org/cookiebakeoff and submit via the form on the web page.

“The Kitchen Witches” is the winner of the 2005 Samuel French Canadian Playwrights Contest. This hilarious comedy follows Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle as they attempt to host a local access cooking show together, despite the fact that they’ve been rivals since high school. The insults—and food—will fly as these two create a hit show that combines the best elements of Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer.

“The Kitchen Witches” is produced with special arrangement with Samuel French.
