Monticello outscored Bellevue 31-20 in the second half, on the way to a season-opening 60-45 victory over Bellevue Tuesday, Nov. 22 at Bellevue.

The win gave the Panthers (1-0, 1-0) an early upper hand in the River Valley Conference, North Division standings in the first of two meetings between the teams.

Taylor McDonald scored 19 points and Lauren Ries added 10 to pace the Panthers. Maddie Fellinger came off the bench to score nine points.

Monticello led 19-15 at halftime, but Bellevue rallied to take a one-point lead in the third quarter.

The Panthers then went on a 15-4 run that proved to be decisive.

“I thought we did a great job of playing as a team,” Monticello coach Donnie Kremer said. “We did a good job on defense all night long. We shot pretty well from the three-point line (8-for-19).

“There were nerves at the beginning, but when we settled down we played very well against a very good Belleuve team.”

Monticello controlled the boards, grabbing 30 rebounds to Bellevue’s 17. Eight different Panthers grabbed at least one rebound apiece, led by Rylee Warthen with six, Jordan Kuper with five and Ries with four.

The Panthers also shared the ball well, totaling 14 assists. Jacqueline Petersen, Shay Stephen, McDonald and Ries each had three of those. McDonald and Ries also had eight steals apiece, out of the team’s 20.

“I thought Lauren Ries had a solid all-around game,” the coach said. “Taylor McDonald did a nice job, as did Maddie Lambert and Rylee Warthen. Maddie Fellinger did a very nice job coming off the bench and giving us some good minutes, as did Jordan Kuper and Carly Hayen.”

Rebecca Schroeder led Bellevue with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Kelchen added 14 points and Camryn Reeg had 10 for the Comets.

Monticello was scheduled to play at Northeast of Goose Lake Nov. 29, and at West Branch Dec. 2. The home opener will be Tuesday, Dec. 6 against Camanche.
