Each month, Monticello High School nominates a student who exhibits positive behavior, a part of an initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The students support the school’s characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Safety, and Integrity.

MHS Senior Keagan Glawatz found out he was named Student of the Month for March while walking into English class last week.

“Mrs. (Megan) Rush congratulated me,” he said.

Glawatz was nominated by MHS Art Teacher Jane Woodhouse who shared that he “regularly shows the PBIS characteristics of respect and responsibility. He is very conscientious about his learning, is helpful and respectful to other students and to the staff also.”

Glawatz has taken art classes with Woodhouse since his freshman year of high school. This year, he’s in her painting class.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said of the recognition. “I feel pretty good about myself.”

Glawatz said he does not exhibit good PBIS characteristics to get attention.

“I’m not actively holding the door open for the recognition,” he said.

Glawatz shows respect for his fellow classmates and those around him during art class.

“I always put away my stuff and clean up after myself and others if they don’t do it,” he shared.

In terms of being helpful, Glawatz said he comes to art class every morning, his first class of the day, and takes the chairs down before students start coming into class.

Art and design are subjects Glawatz enjoys, so much so that he plans to attend Kirkwood Community College in the fall for graphic design.

“I like creating stuff and learning,” he said.

In the future, Glawatz sees himself working in marketing and advertising.

Glawatz has been going to school in-person, with the exception of the first week of school.

“I went online for one week at the beginning and it was bad,” he said. Glawatz explained it was hard to communicate with all of his teachers and accomplish his assignments in a timely manner.

His favorite subject is history “because I love learning about what happened” in the past.

In terms of his least favorite subject, Glawatz was kind and said, “I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus.”

Aside from academics, Glawatz runs in cross country and is involved with the SODA group, Students Opposed to Drugs and Alcohol. Glawatz said the SODA groups hasn’t been able to meet much or do many activities due to COVID. The timing of his Kirkwood classes also interferes.

Outside of school, Glawatz was working at Teddy’s Barn & Grill in Amber. Now, he’s anticipating getting a job at McOtto’s in Anamosa.

In his free time, Glawatz enjoys running, biking, reading, and drawing.

Glawatz extends his appreciation to Woodhouse for nominating him for Student of the Month.

“She’s a good teacher,” he said.

Glawatz is the son of Andrea and Jeremy Glawatz of Monticello.
