Each month, Monticello High School nominates a student who exhibits positive behavior, as part of an initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). The students support the school’s characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Safety, and Integrity.

On May 18, the MHS special education students took a fieldtrip to Swiss Valley Nature Center in Dubuque. Special Education teacher Kelly Derby nominated MHS junior Miles Hatchel for Student of the Month.

“Miles was a big part of the fieldtrip and really stepped up,” she praised. “He helped his peers many times, cooked food for everyone, brought extra boots and shoes for those who didn’t (have any), and had a great attitude toward everyone.”

Hatchel said the fieldtrip was a fun day for the students to just get out.

He enjoys grilling food, and said it’s something he’s good at and something he likes to do.

In terms of having extra shoes for his fellow classmates, Hatchel said he just had some old pairs sitting around, and knew some might want an old pair to wear while walking in the water at the park.

Hatchel found out he was named Student of the Month from English teacher Rebecca DeWitte.

“Mrs. Derby obviously thinks I’m a good student who helps people out,” he said as to why he was nominated.

“I was surprised and excited,” he said of the recognition and honor.

As the school year comes to an end (last day was May 28), Hatchel said he enjoys school, and just hopes to pass all of his classes.

His favorite class is shop “because I like to work with my hands and build things,” he said. His least favorite subject is algebra.

“I just don’t understand math,” he said.

Hatchel is involved in FFA and is on the wrestling team.

He was working as a farmhand. He also enjoys spending time working on his truck. He hopes to own his own farm one day.

Hatchel is the grandson of Lisa Boysen of Monticello.
