Surface stabilization applied to Violet Road
County Engineer Derek Snead and Assistant Engineer Todd Postel explained a recent surface stabilization project during July 5 Jones County Supervisor meeting.
The magnesium chloride solution was recently applied to Violet Road due to increased traffic and use as a result of the Buffalo Road bridge replacement project.
"We want to continue with these projects and make them grow," Snead said of applying surface stabilization to more gravel roadways, "add more miles."
Surface stabilization was applied to 2.2 miles on Violet Road in May, and both Snead and Postel reported that it's performing well. This came at a cost of about $14,000.
"It as put down because of the detour of adjacent traffic," said Snead.
Since then, two different landowners, though, have requested to apply additional dust control.
"We'll let them put their own products down," offered Snead of essentially a second application. "It's not adverse to our material."
Following the magnesium chloride application, Postel said they bladed Violet Road as well.
"It looks like and is performing just like our other surface stabilization projects," he told the board of its success.
The one exception might be River Road in Monticello.
"It holds the road top together and builds a base and prevents potholes and wash boarding," explained Snead.
Concerning the Buffalo Road Bridge, the concrete base was poured. The grading contractor has plans to move in within the next week, and complete the grading within two weeks. Following the grading, a paving contractor will mobilize.
"It's all moving along well," Snead said. "The bridge turned out nice."
