Surging MHS sends two to Drake

     The Monticello Panthers are moving up the ladder. And two of them are moving on to the Drake Relays.

     The Panthers had two meets last week, and learned over the weekend that seniors Avery Martensen (110-meter hurdles) and Wade Picray (discus) have qualified for Drake.

     Both will compete Friday morning, April 26 at Drake Stadium. The 110 hurdle prelims begin at 8:30 a.m., and discus competition starts at 9 a.m.

     “Avery has always been good in the hurdles, and now we’re really starting to see him run the way I always knew he could (in the other events),” Monticello coach Greg Williams said.

     “Wade is big and strong, and he’s good enough to place at State, so it will be a great experience for him to go down there and throw in that meet.”

     As a team, the Panthers had two strong performances in meets last week.

     “Following a fifth place finish in the Tiger Co-Ed meet April 16 at Tipton, Monticello finished second in its own co-ed invitational on a chilly night April 18.

     “Our goal this year has been to be a more competitive team when we get on the track,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “We’re meeting that goal with every meet we attend.”

     Martensen won both hurdle events at Tipton, the 110 hurdles in 14.85 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 56.72. Picray won the discus with a throw of 151-foot-0, and Lake Stahlberg was shot put champion at 48-6.75. The distance medley relay team of Gavin Cooper, Colin Jordan, Rylan Cooper and Carter Cruise also was first, in 3:55.17.

     The Panthers moved up to second place as a team in the home co-ed meet April 18. Center Point-Urbana won that meet with 157 points, Monticello was second with 107, and North Linn was third with 98.

     Caden Ungs had a personal record 5-11 leap in the high jump to win that event. Other winners were Picray in the discus, Carter Cruise in the 400, and the 800 sprint medley team of Jordan, Jon Mootz, Rylan Cooper and Martensen.

     The Panthers also double-scored in four events: Cruise first and Harrison Eastburn fifth in the 400, Ty Jesenovec fourth and Caden Ungs sixth in the 110 hurdles, Stahlberg second and Picray fourth in the shot put, and Zach Chapman fifth and Gavin Baugh sixth in the 1,600.
