Three meets open Eagles' season

Cross country

     Midland has competed in three meets so far in the cross country season.

     The Eagles opened the season Sept. 4 at Tipton. Trent Rickels led the team with a time of 22:46, Tanner Stoll finished in 25:19, Hunter Wink was clocked in 27:24, and Bryce Rushford had a time of 28:59.

     On Sept. 10, Midland competed in its home meet at Little Bear, and showed improved times. Rickels finished 30th individually in 20:19, Stoll was 44th in 21:30, Rushford finished in 24:56, and Jacob Ervin had a time of 35:48 for his first race of the year.

     Midland competed in the grueling Cascade Invitational Sept. 14 at Fillmore Fairways. The Eagles sent three runners; Rickels finished in 21:08, Rushford had a time of 29:10, and Wink was clocked in 32:44.

     “It has been a while since Midland had run at Cascade, so it was a learning experience for all,” Midland coach Jon Eganhouse said. “Besides being very hilly, it was also pushing 90 degrees.

     “We have a young team, but they will learn quickly and make strides in cutting minutes off their times.”

 

Volleyball

     Midland got its Tri-Rivers Conference volleyball season underway, and also played in a tournament last week.

     At East Buchanan Sept. 13, Midland lost in three sets, 12-25, 16-25, 13-25. The match was the opener of the TRC portion of the schedule.

     Mikayla Dosland had eight assists and served four aces, and Emma Dusanek had seven digs. Delanie Uppena had four kills. Ella Rupp served two aces.

     On Sept. 15, the Eagles (0-1, 1-16) traveled to the Lisbon Tournament, and lost three matches in pool play. Midland fell to host Lisbon 13-21, 8-21 to open the day. Uppena had four kills, and Dosland made eight assists. Dusanek had seven digs. Rupp served 5-for-5.

     Against Calamus-Wheatland, the Eagles lost 14-21, 11-21. Uppena had five kills in that match. Dusanek had eight digs, and Rupp had six. Dosland had nine assists.

     Midland then lost to North Fayette Valley 16-21, 15-21. Dosland had 10 assists, six digs and served 7-for-8. Also getting six digs apiece were Dusanek and Uppena. Brennah Ricketts had three kills.

 

Football

     Midland’s dominance of the middle two quarters proved the difference in a 70-40 win at Easton Valley Sept. 14.

     The Eagles (4-1) led 22-20 after one period, but outscored the River Hawks 42-14 over the second and third quarter for a 64-34 lead.

     Britan Martens rushed 26 times for 205 yards and four touchdowns, and completed 10 of 14 passes for another 205 yards and four scores. Jensen Dodge was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown tosses, while Alex Smith and Peyton Rupp each had a TD catch as well. Dodge finished with 77 receiving yards; Peyton Rupp had 56 and Smith had 55. Smith also rushed for 75 yards and two scores.

     Defensively, Griffin Gravel led the team with 10 tackles, while Ethan Orr and Carsen Rupp had nine apiece. Carsen Rupp made three interceptions, and Trevor Gudenkauf had one. Peyton Rupp recovered an Easton Valley fumble.
