For three seniors, season concludes at state tourney
They are three seniors, pillars of the successful Monticello High School bowling teams of recent years.
They include two boys, Easton Lee and Logan Farmer, both of whom qualified for the state tournament for three consecutive years. And one girl, Emma Hynick, became the first Panther female to earn a trip to State.
Together they converged on Maple Lanes in Waterloo for the Class 1A State Individual Bowling Tournament Tuesday, Feb. 22.
While none of the three reached the goal of a top-eight finish, which would have qualified them for the eight-bowler bracket competition that ultimately decided the individual state titles, they all had their moments.
Lee finished 10th overall out of the 32 boys at the tournament, missing the eighth and final bracket qualifying spot by 17 pins. Lee bowled 214-214-236–664.
Farmer was 19th overall, shooting 215-186-227–628.
“Not bad scores,” Monticello coach Brian Meyer said, “but there was a 299 two lanes to the left of us, there was a 280 right next to us, and there was another 280 two lanes down the other way. So the scores, particularly in the second game, were skyrocketing.
“I know they were both disappointed, but they had great careers.”
Hynick bowled a 147-158-160–465 series to finish 25th in the girls’ tournament.
“She bowled well,” Meyer said. “She made a lot of spares. Emma Hynick is not afraid of anything. Out for bowling for two years, and making the state tournament? Not a lot of people can say that.”
Meyer said the middle school bowling program was scheduled to begin Feb. 28, and that although the high school program has lost a number of State-level bowlers the past few seasons, there is hope for the future.
“We’ve got some great kids coming up,” the coach said.
